The 2021 Syrah Hidden Terrace Vineyard is a potent Sonoma wine. Savory herbs, menthol, licorice, espresso and dried flowers are all kicked up. A healthy dose of stems (65%) adds notable aromatic presence, while big, sweeping tannins wrap it all together.

Lots of bright berry fruits, sappy herbs, cracked peppercorns, and cedar notes all emerge from the 2018 Syrah Hidden Terrace Vineyard, a pure, medium-bodied Syrah that has nicely integrated acidity and a clean, lengthy finish. It's a touch firm and angular currently yet benefits from time in the glass, and it should round into form nicely with 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for a decade.

The 2018 Syrah Hidden Terrace Vineyard is a very pretty wine. In 2018, the Fishers opted to use a fair amount of whole clusters (40%), which adds striking aromatic lift and real sense of grace, while bringing out redder tonalities of fruit and giving the wine lift. In 2018, the Syrah is not quite as savory as it can be, but it is attractive just the same.

From a vineyard in Sonoma County, the 2017 Syrah Hidden Terrace Vineyard is a ripe, upfront, vibrant effort with lots of mulled red and black fruits, candied violet, cedar, and peppery spice aromas and flavors. It's nicely textured, medium-bodied, balanced, and ideal for drinking over the coming 5-7 years.

Medium to deep ruby-purple, the 2017 Syrah Hidden Terrace Vineyard offers crunchy black currant and blackberry fruit with notes of tar, cocoa, dried herbs and a hint of olive. The palate is medium to full-bodied with crunchy fruit character, a firm but finely grained frame and just enough freshness on the finish.

The 2017 Syrah Hidden Terrace Vineyard is magnificent. Deep and layered. with striking richness, the 2017 balances savory Syrah intensity with mountain structure. Black pepper, menthol, licorice, grilled herbs and black cherry fruit all open up in this explosive Syrah. This is such a gorgeous and captivating wine.

Deep ruby-purple, the youthfully coiled nose of the 2016 Syrah Hidden Terrace Vineyard slowly gives up black and white pepper, violet, fried herbs, graphite and beef drippings plus notions of green olive and garrigue over an intense core of ripe black and blue fruits. The palate is full-bodied, rich and intense with a solid frame of grainy tannins and good freshness to lift the dense finish. Give this another few years in bottle. 192 cases produced.

The 2016 Syrah Hidden Terrace Vineyard is very primary today. Dense, pliant and creamy, the 2016 offers terrific textural richness, but less in the way of aromatic nuance. Time in bottle should take care of that, though. This pretty, inviting Syrah is endowed with tremendous character and personality, as all of the best Fisher wines are.

The 2016 Syrah Hidden Terrace Vineyard comes from a site in Sonoma County, and it has an incredibly spicy, perfumed bouquet that has plenty of blue fruits as well as classic Syrah gamey, pepper, herbal notes. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and textured, it's a ripe, sexy Syrah to drink over the coming 6-8 years. This wine is 95% Syrah and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, saw 15% stems, and spent 21 months in 20% new French oak. There are 192 cases produced.

One of the under the radar gems in this lineup, the 2015 Syrah Hidden Terrace Vineyard loaded with both varietal and mountain character. Inky fruit, pepper, game, smoke, tobacco and licorice notes abound. Even with all of its fruit intensity, the Syrah retains a very classic expression of structure that helps keep things in check. The 30% stems are not especially evident. This is an impressive wine from the Fisher family.

The 2015 Syrah Hidden Terrace Vineyard is medium to deep garnet-purple colored with a drop-dead gorgeous nose of plum preserves, blueberry compote and violets plus hints of smoked meats, yeast extract and Indian spices. Full-bodied with a rock-solid structure to effortlessly support the exuberant black fruit, the tannins are firm yet rounded and approachable, and there is a great line of freshness anchoring the ethereal fruit. It finishes long and perfumed. 135 cases produced.

The 2013 Syrah Hidden Terrace Vineyard is once again one of the most distinctive wines in the Fisher range. Black pepper, smoke, savory herbs, inky dark fruit and wild flowers all blossom effortlessly to fill out the wine's ample frame. There is something magical about this Spring Mountain estate and the Syrah has plenty to say.

A rich, explosive wine, the 2012 Syrah is absolutely delicious. Firm tannins provide the backdrop for a superb mountain Syrah endowed with tons of personality. Iron, smoke, tobacco and leather are all laced into the finish. Fisher's Syrah is not especially varietal; it is more an expression of the estate vineyard, but it is fabulous just the same.

Dark purple. Classic syrah aromas of blackberry, cherry pit, violet and black pepper, with a bright mineral overtone. Spicy and precise on the palate, offering sweet, deep flavors of black and blue fruits complicated by a hint of candied flowers. The floral and mineral qualities come back on the finish, which features silky, building tannins. (JR)

Opaque ruby. Perfumed and fresh on the nose, showing blackberry and candied cherry aromas underscored by musky licorice and baking spices. The bright, clean palate offers suave red and dark berry preserve flavors, supple tannins and excellent back-end lift. This approachable syrah finishes with impressive sweet, spicy persistence. (JR)

Inky purple. Blackberry, boysenberry and plum on the nose, with hints of violet and espresso in the background. Fleshy and sweet on entry, then firmer in the middle, with very good depth to its dark berry and floral pastille flavors. Dusty tannins add grip to the long, subtly smoky, sweet finish. I suspect that this will be drinkable on the young side thanks to its lavish fruit.

Inky ruby. Intensely perfumed aromas of blackberry, blueberry and olive are underpinned by Indian spices and dried flowers. Lively dark berry flavors are given spine by zesty minerality and framed by fine-grained tannins. A floral element arrives with air and carries through the long, gently sweet and smoky finish. I really like this wine's clarity and mineral-driven energy.

Glass-staining ruby. Textbook syrah aromas of blackcurrant, licorice, smoked meat and violet. Dark berries and olive on the palate, with complicating notes of candied flowers and minerals building on the back end. Impressively juicy syrah with excellent finishing clarity and spicy persistence.

The 2006 Syrah Hidden Terrace Vineyard’s bouquet of white pepper, black fruits, roasted meats, bouquet garni, and tar is followed by a deep, full-bodied, juicy, northern Rhone-like red that should drink well for a decade or more.

A relatively new project, the dark ruby/purple-tinged 2005 Syrah Hidden Terrace Vineyard offers up beautiful aromas of rose petals, black currants, and sweet cherries. The bouquet smells like a California version of a Rhone Valley Cote Rotie. Medium-bodied with good acidity, and a northern Rhone-like personality (because of the acid profile and moderate tannin), it should drink well for 7-8 years.

Bright red-ruby. Musky raspberry, roasted herbs, flint, smoke and pepper on the varietally expressive nose. Dense and supple, with subtly complex flavors of raspberry, pepper, spices and herbs. No easy sweetness here. Finishes with noteworthy aromatic persistence and a lingering peppery flavor. Very syrah.

Deep ruby. Wild, smoky red berry aromas, with strong pepper and mineral accents. Lush and fleshy, with the flavors of sweet raspberry and strawberry picking up riper tones with aeration. Finishes on a spicy redcurrant note, with excellent length. The 2005 version showed a strongly resinous, floral quality but was too shut down to judge.

Even better than the 2005 (perhaps because it is a year older), the outstanding, deep ruby/purple-tinged 2004 Syrah Hidden Terrace Vineyard offers hints of smoky blackberries, lard, chocolate, pepper, and spice. It is a seriously endowed, supple-textured Syrah to consume during its first 4-5 years of life.
