The 2021 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard is powerful, dense and quite phenolic in feel, but also shows more energy than is often the case here. Citrus confit, tangerine peel, white pepper and white flowers lend notable brilliance throughout. This is a gorgeous, intensely savory/mineral Chardonnay.

The 2020 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard is bright and airy. Hints of dried lemon peel, herbs, chamomile, almond and crushed flowers give the 2020 a decidedly savory profile that works well with its phenolic personality. Readers will find a distinctive mountain Chardonnay that is more about structure than fruit, even if that is dialed back in this vintage.

The 2019 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard is bright and high-toned, as it often is, but it also has gorgeous depth and fabulous balance. Citrus peel, white flowers, chalk and white pepper are all beautifully delineated in the glass. Readers will want to give the 2019 at least a year or two in bottle. Today, it is a bit nervy in feel, but it is all there.

Brioche, toasted nuts, and honeyed lemon and peach notes all emerge from the 2018 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard, and it's medium to full-bodied, well-oaked, rich, and textured. It's certainly made in a richer style, yet it’s balanced and has good acidity.

The 2018 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard is bright and tightly wound, which will serve it well in aging. Lemon confit, almond, dried flowers and chamomile are finely cut. In 2018, the Mountain Estate Chardonnay offers lovely translucence. The late harvest with cool nights yielded a Chardonnay built on tension and persistence more than size.

The 2018 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard has open-knit aromas of baked apples, chamomile, almonds, baker’s yeast and an herbal tone. Medium-bodied, the palate is silky and gently savory, with good freshness and a leesy touch, finishing uplifted.

I was able to taste two Chardonnays under the Fisher Vineyards label. Brought up in 45% new French oak, the 2017 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard offers a rich, Meursault-like vibe in its buttery orchard fruits, toasted nut, honeyed flower, spice, and subtle mineral-laced aromas and flavors. It's rich, concentrated, and opulent, yet has good acidity and a focused, balanced, lengthy style on the palate. While I'd drink bottles over the coming 4-6 years, I wouldn't be surprised to see it keep longer.

The 2017 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard is a gorgeous wine that captures all the phenolic intensity that is so typical of this site. Ripe pear, graphite, sage, dried herbs, dried flowers and chamomile all develop in the glass, but it is the wine's weight and viscosity that really stand out.

The 2017 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard was harvested September 6-18 and aged 16 months in 45% new French oak. It has a pretty nose of yellow apple, bitter orange, hazelnut and spring honey with a vein of crushed rock/saline, warm white peaches, hay and lemon curd. Medium to full-bodied, it has a good core of savory fruit, juicy acidity and a long, mineral-driven finish. 434 cases produced.

Barrel fermented and aged 15 months in 35% new French oak, the 2016 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard is a rich, full-throttle effort that has ripe notes of buttered citrus, orchard fruits, quince, white flowers, and honeysuckle. Sweetly fruited, powerful, and concentrated, it has bright acidity that keeps it clean and balanced, good mid-palate density, and a great finish. It's not for those looking for lightweight, Chablis-like aromas and flavors but is one seriously pleasure bent beauty to drink over the coming 5-6 years.

Fisher's 2016 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard is bold, luscious and absolutely delicious. Orange peel, lemon confit, apricot, mint, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes all flesh out in this ample, super-expressive Chardonnay. Classy and polished, the Mountain Estate is also the more understated of the two Fisher Chardonnays.

The 2016 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard has an explosive nose of fresh pineapple, guava and lemon meringue pie with lime blossom, mandarin peel and honeysuckle nuances plus wafts of beeswax and baking bread. Medium to full-bodied, the palate follows through on everything the nose promised, offering layer upon layer of tropical, citrus and savory flavors, featuring an electric backbone and long, satisfyingly creamy finish. Wow. 428 cases produced.

Fisher's 2015 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard has turned out beautifully. Soft, silky and nuanced, the 2015 speaks to finesse above all else. Time in barrel seems to have really calmed down the Estate relative to how it showed a year ago. Tangerine, lemon peel and expressive floral notes grace the polished, understated finish.

The 2014 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard is deep and powerful, with plenty of the phenolic intensity that is so typical of this mountain site. Lees stirring during aging brings out further texture and volume. Candied lemon, chamomile, vanillin and spice notes are amped up in this powerful Chardonnay. I would prefer to give the 2014 at least 6-12 months to recover from its recent bottling.

The 2014 Chardonnay Mountain Estate from an Old Wente clone and aged in 50% new French oak is full-bodied with beautiful notes of tangerine oil, orange marmalade, lemon custard, brioche, white peach and pineapple. There is some underlying wet gravel, giving it a stunning minerality. This is a beauty to drink over the next 5-7 years.

2013

Antonio Galloni

91

The 2013 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard is a pretty wine, but it is also much more delicate than it was from barrel, mostly because it was filtered. Dried pear, smoke, spice and white orchard fruit are all laced together in a delicate Chardonnay built on nuance.

2013

The 2013 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard shows slightly crisper acids, a more close-to-the-vest style, with notes of white currants, quince, wet stones and a touch of white peach. The wine is medium-bodied and seems to offer up loads of fruit, but in a zestier, slightly less dramatic style than its 2012 counterpart. It could be only a question of being a year younger.

Fisher's 2012 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard is flat out gorgeous. Lightly honeyed aromatics meld into wild flowers, almonds and dried apricots, but it is really the wine's viscous texture that impresses above all else.

Bright gold. Smoke-accented aromas of ripe pear and melon, with a lemony note adding lift. Picks up iodine and mineral qualities on the palate, which displays intense orchard and citrus fruit flavors and a touch of sweet butter. A sexy floral note builds on the long, chewy finish, with the smoky note echoing. The 2012 version of this bottling looks like it will be deeper and denser than this wine, but with similar suave floral and mineral character.

Bright yellow-gold. Powerful, mineral-laced aromas of candied orchard and citrus fruits, with notes of honey, jasmine and fig emerging with aeration. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering energetic pear and nectarine flavors lifted by tangy acidity. Closes on a spicy note, with impressive length and lingering chalkiness.

The 2011 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard jumps from the glass with nectarine, lime and white flowers. The style is bright, focused and beautifully delineated throughout. These steep, hillside parcels yield a distinctive Chardonnay with considerable energy, especially in the cool 2011 vintage. Hints of apple and green pear are woven into the finish. This is a striking Chardonnay from Whitney Fisher.

Bright yellow. Intensely perfumed nose displays orchard fruits, nectarine, white flowers and iodine. Intense and tactile on entry, then taut and linear in the middle, with very good energy to its citrus fruit, melon and floral flavors. A powerful, palate-staining chardonnay that manages to come off as lithe and fat-free.

Fisher's 2010 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard is striking in its beauty. Butter, almonds, pear and chamomile wrap around the palate in this big, broad-shouldered wine. The 2010 is powerful and yet also voluptuous and beautifully balanced throughout. A huge, creamy finish rounds things out in style.

Light yellow. Fresh pineapple and pear on the nose, with complicating notes of mace, chamomile and buttered toast. At once rich and energetic, offering lively tropical fruit flavors, with citrus zest and floral nuances picking up strength with air. Juicy and spicy on the finish, which clings with very good tenacity. I'd let this rest for another year or so but it looks very promising.

The 2009 Chardonnay Mountain Estate possesses striking textural richness and depth. It fleshes out beautifully on the mid-palate, with generous fruit and beautifully delineated aromatics. A long, caressing finish rounds things out nicely.

Bright gold. Complex scents of poached pear, guava and tangerine, complicated by sweet butter, toasted nuts and a hint of jasmine. Rich and fleshy on entry, offering gently sweet orchard and tropical fruit flavors, then brighter in the mid-palate, with zesty citrus notes adding vivacity to the more exotic fruit qualities. The buttery element returns on the finish, which leaves smoke and baking spice notes behind. This could handle the richest seafood or poultry dishes with ease.

The 2008 Chardonnay Mountain Estate shows off plenty of varietal character and nuance to match its rich, textured personality. Hints of butter, spices and minerals wrap around the attractive, voluptuous finish.

Bright greenish yellow. Ripe pear and peach on the nose, with hints of smoky lees and toasted grain adding complexity. Rich, marrowy orchard fruit flavors stain the palate, braced by zesty mineral and citrus qualities. Offers a suave blend of richness and vivacity and finishes with excellent clarity and mineral-driven persistence.

Pale yellow-gold. Leesy aromas of spices and citrus fruits; with aeration this smelled more like a pina colada. At once sweet and bright, with moderately thick stone fruit and citrus flavors nicely framed by harmonious acidity and underlying stoniness. Finishes with very good breadth and length.

Green-gold. Intensely spicy aromas of vibrant lemon and lime are given depth by hints of sweet butter and vanilla bean. Very stony on the palate, with citrus and green apple flavors braced by racy acidity. The impressively energetic finish features impressive focus and persistence. This was aged in 50% new oak but I don't sense it.

2005

The 2005 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard exhibits more honeysuckle and ripe peach characteristics in a plusher, more open-knit, fleshier style. Both whites should drink well for several years.

Twenty-five percent of the outstanding, complex 2003 Chardonnay Mountain Estate Vineyard was put through malolactic. Produced primarily from the old Wente clone and small amounts of Dijon material, this Chardonnay reveals hints of litchi and hazelnuts, orange rinds, and subtle brioche. Impressive fruit on the attack and mid-palate, good underlying acidity, and a delicate touch of oak fill out the wine’s personality. This brilliant effort should drink well for 3-4 years.
